When I got these traps (I ordered 2), I was immediately impressed. They are sturdily made of a powder-coated metal, probably steel, and have a very nice trip mechanism. I bought them solely for chipmunks, and immediately baited them and set them out. For several days, I found the trap tripped, but empty. I thought the trigger mechanism was faulty, but the next day found a chippie inside. An hour later I got ready to take the trap out for relocation, and it was empty. Hmmm. I measured the door, and it is about 4" wide, but the opening is 4 ¾", and the door slides freely from side to side. That ¾" opening is plenty of room for chippies or rats to walk right out. So, with this trap, you give your chippies a nice meal, then they laugh and wave as they stroll out to cause other mischief.
If you are trying for squirrels or small rabbits, this should work fine. But for chippies, the poor door design makes it worse than useless.
We bought this trap because we do not believe in killing animals, but we didn't necessarily want them in our house. We have caught 4 red squirrels and released them back into the wild, far from our home. We baited the trap with peanut butter and peanuts out of the shell; it worked every time! This is a perfect trap for those of you who don't want to do any harm to animals. The only issue I have, if you can even call it that, is that the door got stuck and we had to play with it to fix it. This happened just after we got it, so it was new, but we were able to correct it. Despite this, I would highly recommend this humane trap.
