- Squirrels: Cereal, grains, nuts (especially peanuts) sunflower seeds, anise oil (a drop or two on bread), shelled corn, or apples.
- Armadillos: Meal worms, other worms, or insects enclosed in a little cloth bag, maggots, or sardines.
- Chipmunks: Prune pits, un-roasted peanuts, corn, sunflower seeds, peanut butter, cereal, grains, or popcorn.
- Groundhogs: Fresh string beans, sweet corn, lettuce, peas, cantaloupe, strawberries, cucumbers, peaches, or vanilla extract.

Q: What are the advantages of using a two-door trap versus a one-door trap?A: Most people use two-door traps with more cautious animals like squirrels. The thought is that if the animal can see an unblocked path through the trap (since both doors are open), they will have more confidence entering the cage. On the other hand, one-door traps allow the animal to walk further in and past the trip plate. Havahart traps offer both one-door and two-door Easy Set traps to satisfy all customers.
Q: Where should I place the bait?A: Place some bait on top of the trip plate and some more under the trip plate. You can also place the bait just above the trip plate on the ceiling of the trap. It’s important that the bait isn’t placed in an area where the animal can reach it through the mesh without entering the trap.

I can't say enough good things about this trap. The only experience I ever had trapping animals was with gophers when I was a kid. The toughest part of that was rigging the trap so it worked correctly. I knew setting traps took some talent and I had neither the will or time to learn trap setting for my small squirrel problem. In short this trap is incredible. Made in the USA, HIGH quality and super easy. You literally pull up the handle and it sets. Toss a platter of peanut butter in the back and you have hours of entertainment. I say hours because your squirrels will be gone in hours. I caught them as fast as I put the trap out (Many times with me in the yard). I called my frequent trips to the city park the Squirrel Express :P Now I have no squirrels and lots of tasty strawberries and tomatoes to eat! This trap will not disappoint.
After three weeks of trial and error, I finally caught my first squirrel. I started with the Havahart 1025 and found my prey kept getting away. I realized the trap was too small for the little bugger because my bait would disappear even after the trap had sprang. I took it back and got me the next biggest trap that Lowes carries: Havahart 1092. For those who are familiar with the 1092, it's quite huge and made for trapping stray cats, raccoons, and similar sized animals. Though the trap was big it was easy to handle, bait, and set. I left it out for several days without much luck. The little bugger wouldn't take the bait behind the trigger plate. He would nibble at it from the outside of the cage and left me cleaning up after the scraps. Again, I packed up the trap and took it back. I searched the Internet, looking for a retailer that carries the medium-sized traps, specifically the Model 1084. I wasn't interested in online purchase due to the hassle of returns. I didn't find many within the area. One of the major carriers of Havahart traps, however, was Ace Hardware. There were many in the area, so I called around asking for the 1084. After many tries, I found one store who has it. I made my trip there after work and had my trap set that same night. The Model 1084 was small and light, so I was able to position it in the tree where I had the most activity. Unlike the 1092 which opens from both sides, you have reach in to load the bait. I left the persimmon in the back of the cage. When I came back the next day, I found a side of the persimmon had been nibbled away. Fluster but unwavered I decided to hang the persimmon this time and reposition the opening of trap toward a branch where the little bugger can easily access. To my surprise the next day, the cage door had be shut and what looked like a brown ball from faraway turned out to be the little bugger that has been trashing my yard the past year. I was so elated; and I have Havahart to thank for for constructing such a great contraption.
